Task 1 - The purpose of music videos

What a music video is:

A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music or song. Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation and live action filming.

The history of music videos:

With the arrival of the sound films and talkies in 1926, many musical short films were produced. The short films were typically about six minutes in length, and featured art style animations and backgrounds combined with clips of the performer singing the song. When it got to the 1960s bands such as the beatles started to create music videos but not alot of them, because back them music videos were very expensive to create. When it got to the 1980s alot of groups and artists were making videos for alot of there songs. They came into their own in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium, and later with the launch of VH1. In the 80s there were some well known artists that created music videos which were also short films put into one long music video, two examples of these are:

Michael Jackson - thiller

Michael Jackson's Thriller is a 14-minute movie and a music video for the song of the same name released on December 2, 1983 and directed by John Landis, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jackson. At first Michael Jackson had already just made the music video for his song beat it but when his song thiller came out John Landis did not want to direct a video for it but Michael did so they then made it into a short film as well as a music video. The video was choreographed by Michael Peters (who had worked with the singer on his prior hit "Beat It"), with Michael Jackson. In 2006 the Guinness world records listed it as the most successfull music videol. Now it is said to be one of the best music videos ever created. This video also made him more famous for his songs and sold more than 9 million copies of the thiller album.

Bo selecta - Proper crimbo

"Proper Crimbo" is a christmas song from the comedy programme, Bo' Selecta, in which Leigh Francis sings as Craig David and Michael Jackson. The title also refers to a music video release, which saw Francis perform as other characters over the track, and real-life celebrities appeared, many singing, including Bob Geldof, Richard Bacon and Holly Valance.

Who music videos are aimed at:

Although music videos have usually been aimed at a teenage audience, many videos of ballads or "soft rock" songs are now aimed at an older group of viewers. But a lot of people enjoy watching music videos, because lots of different age groups like different songs, so they then want to watch the music video for that particular song.

What music videos are intended to do and how they promote the artist:

Music videos are made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. This way the artist who created the song can also become more famous, not only for the song but also for the music video. Then the more feedback that they get from the music videos, the more ideas they get to create more of them.

How we know that they are successful or not:

The way that we know if a music video is successful or not is by the feedback of the target audience, it is normally good or bad, that way it is easy to see if it has been successful or not. Most music videos today are normally very succesfull, the music videos that normally get very bad feedback are the ones that are made by music groups that no one really likes their songs in the first place.
